SoftPerfect RAM Disk icon and logo
The Task
To create a logo, a program’s icon and an installer picture for the SoftPerfect RAM Disk.
The customer did not set any restrictions nor give any sketches; the only thing they had in mind was “something like a picture of a Random-access memory chip”.
About SoftPerfect RAM Disk
SoftPerfect RAM Disk is a high-performance RAM disk application that creates a virtual disk entirely stored in the computer memory accessible in Windows Explorer and other applications. As the memory is much faster than physical hard disks, storing temporary or intensively accessed data on a fast in-memory disk increases PC performance and protects the hard disk from extra wear.
The Solution
What I definitely won’t do is draw a memory chip. Firstly, because most software that has anything to do with computer memory involves a RAM chip image. Secondly, the SoftPerfect RAM Disk icon is supposed to stay in the system tray, and therefore should look well in 16x16 pixel size and 256 colours while it must still be clearly identified. And finally, it is just boring.
Now, what if I take a ram for RAM?
The sheep Lucas from Adelaide Hills agreed to pose for sketches and photos in exchange for a carrot and two biscuits.
The Result
The picture for the SoftPerfect RAM Disk installer. I came up with the “Let’s RAM a disk” greeting in the process of drawing the funny animal, and the words were added to the picture immediately.
The icons for the SoftPerfect RAM disk software and the program logo. Simple, unusual, bright, funny and literally meaningful.
The programmers were quite surprised with the solution, and they simply loved it!
